BREAST REDUCTION

Breast Reduction surgery, or reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to correct overly large breasts for women. This procedure will reduce the size of the breasts and heaviness that women have to support.  Women considering breast reduction surgery commonly experience health concerns that may affect them physically and emotionally.  The benefits of having breast reduction surgery at our Toronto clinic, include a more proportional breast-to-body relationship, less shoulder, neck and upper back discomfort.  Additionally this procedure will lessen the discomfort during physical activities such as running and other sport activities.  Breast reduction surgery will give the breast a lifted, rejuvenated and more youthful position.

Dr. Beber is an expert in the field of plastic surgery and specifically in many breast reduction techniques.  Small breast reduction that is less than 1 cup size can be achieved with liposuction alone. However, this procedure technique is only possible for patients who have minimal ptosis (drooping) of the breasts since this technique only offers minimal breast lifting.

Most patients in Toronto that required removal of excess skin with the excess of breast tissue and therefore an incision are made to excess the skin.  The incision are made around the edge of the areola and from the bottom of the areola to the crease under the breasts (also call a “vertical’ or “lollipop” technique).   A third incision in the crease under the breast can also be added to allow for even more reduction in size if required.    Often women find that there are extra skin just to the side of their breast on the chest wall also called “bra rolls” can be corrected.  The bra rolls often stick out above or below the bra straps on the side.  Many of Dr. Beber’s patient in Toronto choose to reduce this concern by adding gentle liposuction to this area during the breast reduction procedure.

External factors that could affect the breast size and positon could include weight gain, pregnancy and breast-feeding.  Hence, it’s is very important that Dr. Beber’s breast reduction patients be at a stable weight before surgery.

Women who are considering having children in the near future is recommended to wait until after having children to maximize the longevity of their results and their chances of breast-feeding.  For many patients who had children will often combine their breast reduction procedure with the tummy-tuck procedure (abdominoplasty) to help reverse the impact of pregnancy has on the abdomen.  The tummy-tuck procedure will smooth the abdomen, creating a flatter stomach, remove excess skin along with stretch marks and tightening the muscles along the abdominal wall.  This combination of breast surgery with the tummy-tuck procedure is very popular and been termed the “mommy-makeover’.

During your consultation and examination with Dr. Beber, breast reduction surgical techniques will be reviewed and he will help you decide which technique will work best for you.  It is important to understand that incisions made during breast reduction surgery will result in scars after surgery.  These scars generally heal well and will become lighter in colour over time.  The scars are not visible in clothing or bathing suits.  However as with all scars, they are visible when you are not clothed and they are permanent.

Some risks associated with breast reductions surgery include decrease in the sensitivity of the nipples and breast skin and can have a negative effect on a woman’s ability to breastfeed.   Complications of breast reduction surgery are uncommon, however risks include infection, poor wound healing, bleeding, over or under correction, asymmetry and revision surgery may be required.
