Customized Breast Implant Sizing: The TAP System

Dr. Brett Beber - Toronto's Best Plastic Surgeon

Whether you decide on a silicone or saline implant, choosing your breast implant size is an exciting part of a consultation for breast augmentation in Toronto.  We are here to help guide you every step of the way.  It is important to realize that not every implant size is right for every person.

So how do you choose from the hundreds of available sizes?  The answer – the TAP system.

THE TAP SYSTEM

Dr. Beber has taken the best elements and concepts from different approaches to breast implant selection and combined them in the TAP system.  This approach includes concepts developed by world renowned plastic surgeon Dr. John Tebbets and others, and takes into account three critical elements:

  • Tissue Assessment
  • Anatomic measurements
  • Patient goals

Tissue Assessment

Tissue assessment involves multiple factors including your current breast volume, degree of skin elasticity, and relative position of the breast tissue, nipple, and areola.

Anatomic Measurements

Anatomic measurements include things like the width of your ribcage, how wide the breast is, as well as distance measurements between the nipple, the breast crease and the top of the chest.  These measurements help determine the range of implant diameters and projections that are appropriate.  They also help determine whether a breast lift is recommended at the time of breast augmentation.

Patient Goals

Patient goals means your goals!  The above measurements and tissue assessment of the TAP system will help determine not one, but rather a range of implant sizes that are appropriate for your body from a biodimensional perspective.  You then get to try the implants on in the office to finalize your decision.  After having used 3D imaging systems as part of the sizing process for years and now moved past it, we have determined that giving you the ability to try on the actual implants is far more accurate and empowering in the implant selection process. When trying on implants during your consultation, we use a thin, unstructured bra to maintain the implant position.  The implant will be placed in front of the breast at the appropriate height.  This helps you to visualize not just the volume but also where the implant will sit after surgery.

THE TAP SYSTEM WITH DR. BEBER

It is important to understand that while we have found the TAP system to be incredibly helpful to patients for implant selection, no system can show you exactly how the breasts will look after surgery.  We generally recommend that when you find the size you feel is right for, you choose an implant that is slightly larger to account for the effects the chest wall tissue and musculature can have on the implant.

The beauty of the TAP system is that it combines the scientific biodimensional approach to implant sizing AND your own specific aesthetic goals, along with our expertise, to help you determine the implant that is right for you!
