EYELID LIFT (BLEPHAROPLASTY)
The eyelid lift procedure or a blepharoplasty is cosmetic eyelid surgery designed to improve and rejuvenate the appearance of the upper eyelids and/or lower eyelids at our Toronto clinic. This surgical procedure will give you a more rested and youthful appearance. With aging, stress, heredity or environmental factors your eye can appearance aged or have a tired look. A person who would be a good candidate for blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery would have some or all of these criteria:
- Loose and sagging skin over the upper eyelids that fold and extend over the natural fold. This extend of the fold can impact the vision in extreme cases.
- Excessive fat in the upper and / or lower eyelids
- Lower eye bags
- Excessive skin and wrinkles in the lower lids
In the U.S. in 2015, blepharoplasty was the top 5 cosmetic surgical procedure performed and among those 40 years and older it was the number one procedure performed. Aged eyes are the first sign of aging. Having stress and heredity as factors it can make you feel and look older than you feel. For this reason, blepharoplasty in Toronto is a common procedure.
Blepharoplasty in our Toronto clinic is performed commonly under general anaesthesia when both the upper and lower eyelid require correction. For the upper lid blepharoplasty the incisions are concealed along the natural creases of the lids. Excess skin and any excess fat will be remove allowing for a smoother tighter appearance. With maturity, the scar will heal to a very fine line along the crease folds. In the lower eyelid blepharoplasty surgery, the incision is made just along the lash line. This technique allows Dr. Beber to remove excess skin to offer a smooth appearance in the lower eyelids. In some cases, Dr. Beber will offer a transconjunctival incision where the incision are made inside the lower eyelid.
This technique allows for discreet incisions and would be used to redistribute or remove excess amount of fat in the lower eyelids. Redistribution of fat can help with the appearance of dark circles under the eye. In some patients and depending on the cause of the dark circles, laser skin resurfacing can improve the appearance of the dark circles. Lower blepharoplasty is generally not a great option to treat fine lines under the eyelids. Laser resurfacing such as fractional laser would be more beneficial for treatment of the fine lines. Depending on the structure and anatomy of one’s eye and the cause of the dark circles, dermal fillers may be an options. This will require a thorough assessment.
After a blepharoplasty procedure, there will be removable and or dissolvable sutures along with surgical tape that will require removal at about 5 days. You would be able to return work and social activities at 10 day to 2 weeks after the procedure. Swelling and bruising is common after eyelid surgery and can take up to 3-4 weeks to resolve. Commonly for women, makeup can be used to camouflage the bruises after 5 to 6 days. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 2 weeks and light exercise can be resume after 2 to 3 weeks.
Some of the risks associated with the blepharoplasty procedure or eyelid surgery can include asymmetry, undesirable scar healing, dry eyes, difficulty closing the eyes and injection.
